On the occasion of International Women’s Day, March 8, YouGov conducted a survey for the Sport Business Observatory on the media coverage of women in sport. And the finding is unsurprising: the most publicized sportswomen are the best known to the general public.

Indeed, among the ten sportswomen in activity proposed, it is Alizée Cornet who is the most cited (34%). The tennis player has just completed her best career at the Australian Open by reaching the quarter-finals of the tournament.

The prize list seems less impactful than the media coverage to be known

As proof, the cyclist Pauline Ferrand-Prevot and her exceptional track record: in 2014, she became the first French road world champion, nineteen years after Jeannie Longo. She also won world titles in cyclo-cross and cross-country mountain biking. At 23, she became the first cyclist in history, men and women combined, to simultaneously hold a world title in all three disciplines. Yet she is only known by 14% of respondents.

On the other hand, 44% of respondents say they do not know any of the sportswomen mentioned : among the proposed sportswomen included the captain of the Bleues du foot, Wendie Renard, the goalkeeper of the French handball team Cléopatre Darieu, the biathlete Olympic champion Justine Braisaz.

8 out of 10 French people in favor of more broadcasts of women’s sports competitions on the public service

To promote the emergence of female personalities (whether champions, consultants or journalists) in sport, 79% of French people are in favor that the public media France Télévision and Radio France include more broadcasts of women’s sports competitions. As a reminder, the Women’s Football World Cup which took place in France in 2019 set audience records. The competition had been watched by more than a billion people worldwide. Les Bleues had unfortunately stopped in the quarter-finals, beaten by the Americans, future world champions.

Another idea proposed and which garners 75% of the votes of those polled: a male-female co-presentation for sporting events, whatever they are, as the channel already does The Team with the duo Candice Rolland and Yoann Riou commenting on men’s football matches.

Similarly, 79% of respondents are in favor of a woman leading a sports federation, 78% a sports league, 72% a men’s club team and 71% a men’s national team.

Methodology :

Omnibus study carried out from March 11 to 13, 2022 among 1,007 people representative of the French national population aged at least 18 years. The survey was conducted online on the YouGov France proprietary panel.
