États-Unis : une nouvelle loi transphobe prévoit d’interdire l’inclusion des élèves transgenres en sport

A transphobic bill, aimed at controlling children’s genitals, has just been passed by the Ohio House of Representatives. Enough to relaunch the debate on the place of transgender athletes in sport, and to reiterate the attacks on swimmer Lia Thomas.

Lanti-LGBT+ measures continue to proliferate in the USA. Latest: a bill targeting transgender athletes passed by the Ohio State House of Representatives. The Save Women’s Sports Act provides for the implementation of genital controls for athletes whose gender identity is disputed. Stipulating that no “male individual” is permitted to play sports on girls-only school teams, this measure will apply for children from the age of 6 in school, high school and college, reports RMC Sports. For now, the text has not yet been validated by the Senate, so the mystery remains intact until next November.

“Across our country, female athletes are losing championships, scholarships, medals and educational opportunities because of discriminatory policies that allow biological men to compete in women’s sports,” said Jena Powell, State Representative, at News 5 Cleveland.

The “Save Women’s Sports Acts” is based on several elements: internal and external reproductive anatomy, “normal” levels of endogenously produced testosterone and an analysis of the person’s genetic makeup. In the event of non-compliance with the measures, schools will be sanctioned.

Lia Thomas in the crosshairs

Leia Thomas. For several months, his name has been on everyone’s lips. The young woman indeed became last March the first transgender swimmer to earn a university degree in a 457 meter freestyle. A title strongly contested by its detractors accusing it of benefiting from physiological advantages compared to its competitors. The young woman had yet followed the new rules imposed by the National Swimming Federation, which consisted of a limit level of testosterone not to be exceeded, but the opinions of its detractors had not changed.

At present, only one transgender athlete practices athletics at his high school in Ohio. “I can be myself, I don’t have to put on a mask or pretend to be someone else”, says Ember, softball player. Ohio is not the only state to oppose transgender athletes in sports activities. In Florida, for example, transgender children are banned from playing sports at school.

A situation that is not likely to improve over time since a vast majority of Americans (62%) think trans athletes should only be allowed to play on sports teams that match their birth sexaccording to one annual survey produced by the Gallup statistics institute.
