ABU DHABI, 9th June, 2022 (WAM) — Abu Dhabi has made sporting history by bringing the Cowes Week Sailing Regatta to its shores in January 2023, cementing its position as the sporting capital of the Middle East.

Since 1826, Cowes Week has been a permanent fixture on the British summer sporting calendar, making it one of the oldest and most successful sporting events in the world. This international regatta now hosts up to 40 daily races for around 750 boats, making it the largest event of its kind in the world.

The event offers a great mix of sailing competitions and social activities. More than 8,500 competitors compete there, including Olympic and world-class professionals as well as weekend sailors. The event attracts over 100,000 spectators and supporters who watch the sailing teams, enjoy the parties and entertainment, and experience the unique atmosphere. It is a truly unique experience. The initiative was officially announced last night in Abu Dhabi by Khalid Al Mutawa, President of Global Mission and President of Z Zone Events LLC. He said: “We are delighted to be hosting this prestigious sporting event in Abu Dhabi next year and we will be welcoming international sailors from around the world to Abu Dhabi. This event will provide local and regional sailors with an ideal opportunity to compete against the best in the world.”

“While Cowes Week has been around for almost 200 years, it was only recently organized by one body and will take place outside the UK for the very first time in 2023,” Al Mutawa said. “As well as showcasing the UAE’s sporting attractions to the world, the event will also make Abu Dhabi’s tourist attractions more accessible. we plan to make this a permanent event.”

Cowes Week Regatta Director Laurence Mead said: “We are delighted to partner with Z Zone Events LLC and bring the Cowes Week Regatta to Abu Dhabi and encourage more sailors to participate.
