There are many sites to renovate, fit out and create new sports structures. In 2022, a synthetic pitch, a weights room and a cyclo-cross at the Guitardié will come out of the ground.
The plain of sports bears its name better and better. Several projects to develop new sports facilities should be completed by the end of the year on this 18-hectare space.
The synthetic turf pitch for football and rugby will be delivered in the spring. This allows use for 70 hours per week (compared to about fifteen for natural grass pitches).
Around this field, six locker rooms and a parking lot will also come out of the ground. The town hall took the opportunity to build offices for the clubs that will use the lawn (the SCA and the ASPTT) as well as a weight room, the second in the city of Albi, the other being located at the Stadium.
A cyclo-cross by the end of the year
A little further, along the Tarn, a cyclocross will also see the light of day. This 1.8 km long course was designed and designed with Arnaud Jouffroy, current coach of the French cyclocross team. The Albi vélo sport and Albi triathlon associations, the first interested in this equipment, were also involved in the project (see below). “They are the ones who expressed the wish for a route to train during the winter period”, explains sports assistant Michel Franques. Total cost: 200,000 euros.
“It will be one of the only permanent cyclo-crosses in France”, specifies Michel Franques. Once the work is completed, Arnaud Jouffroy aims to come to Albi to do internships with his riders from the French team, which will give a national dimension to this field.
As the sport with a national dimension, even international, interests the municipality, this one does not forget the Mazicou stadium which hosts rugby league. Studies will be launched in 2022 to rehabilitate the opposite stand. The work will be carried out in 2023 to be ready for the 2025 Rugby League World Championships, during which Albi will host matches.
Finally, the City does not forget its inhabitants. To ride the wave of sport-health that developed during the health crisis, the town hall wants to multiply the installation of apparatus. The first will be visible in the Jardin d’Aragon, once its development is complete. A part will be for the elderly to make it as accessible as possible to all.
“We can’t wait to see the cyclo-cross!”
The Albi vélo sport club has 140 members, most of whom are looking forward to the future cyclo-cross course. The project started from a “banal” idea, as President Xavier Rouanet explains: “before we trained at Pratgraussals, there was even a national competition on this site a few years ago. Then when the works started, we couldn’t get there”
The town hall then gave him the idea of La Guitardié, a flat piece of land to be developed. “I contacted Arnaud Jouffroy, double world champion hopeful. He imagined it from cyclo-cross terrains that he knew”, explains the president of the club. “The objective was to have a tool approved for national and international competitions”, continues Xavier Rouanet. “We would like to host a French Cup again in a few years”.
Chain the triathlon events on a secure site
And why not host the French teams, coached by Arnaud Jouffroy? “He lives in Montpellier, Albi is not very far. And there is Cap’Découverte 15 minutes away with all the infrastructure to welcome teams and make physical preparations”, slips the president of the club.
The triathlon club is also interested in the future land located on the banks of the Tarn. “We will be able to link swimming, cycling and running in the same place and in a secure way”, rejoices David Baures, president of the club.
Currently, the youngsters start training at the Atlantis swimming pool, then they cycle to Pratgraussals where they end up running. A whole logistics “quite stressful”, admits the president, because they cross cars and walkers. “At the Guitardié, we will link the three disciplines in real conditions and in perfect autonomy”.
