The Assaut U18 team won the Provincial School Hockey Championship, LHPS section, this year.
If the Assaut d’Amqui clubs had a brilliant school hockey season, the time has come to rebuild the troops, by recruiting not only new players, but also new boarding families, a real challenge for the ‘organization.
Renowned for training excellent student-athletes in its five sports disciplines, Armand-Saint-Onge high school’s sports-study program (Assault) is gaining more and more notoriety at the provincial level. Last spring, two Assaut hockey teams, the U18 and U15, distinguished themselves at the grand finale of the Provincial School Hockey Championship.
The under-18 team (U18) even left as champion of the Quebec Student Sports Network (RSEQ), LHPS section. A feat that will certainly not dampen the interest of young hockey players in the region to join the ranks of the Assault. Moreover, the Amqui high school is the only establishment east of Rimouski to offer a school hockey program from the RSEQ. It should also be remembered that the Assault hockey clubs were able to count on the expertise of a former professional hockey player during the past season. Jordan Caron offered weekly individual development and improvement clinics, a helping hand that visibly paid off this year.
“I accompanied them as a coach since they started in high school. We have often had difficult seasons, but to end the season with a cup, we could not have asked for better. Especially since for many, it was their last year in the Assault”, expressed the coach of the U18s, Cedric Hautcoeur, taking stock of the last season.
A year under the sign of reconstruction
Since 2022 marked the end of high school for many Assault student-athletes, the next few months will be dedicated to reconstruction. Dozens of hockey players from the eastern part of the province will meet on August 26, 27 and 28 for training camp for the 2022-2023 season. But the challenge does not end with recruiting new players. Cedric Hautcoeur admits that the sinews of war consists in finding new families to accommodate student-athletes from outside, from the Gaspé Peninsula among others.
“We are really in recruitment mode, we still have several pension families to find,” he says. “For the amateurs, it’s fun to follow their little boy from pension. There is a remuneration for these families, ”he continues, inviting hockey fans to come forward. In this sense, an information meeting will take place this Wednesday, June 15, 6 p.m., at the Amqui high school library.
