A young, local initiative with an infectious smile. The Brest New Generation Majorettes club was created 3 years ago. Today it counts 22 licensees, ages 4 to 16. The objective is simple: to animate the city of Brest with a good communicative mood.
It’s halftime for the Brest team’s basketball game. When suddenly, a dozen young ladies enter the ring, in their red and white costumes. In their hands sometimes pompoms, sometimes sticks. They are the New Generation Majorettes. They animate each quarter-time with music.
A family club
It was Océane, who decided to create this club 3 years ago, so she didn’t only 19 years old : “The only club in Finistère was in Lampaul-Guimiliau. So coming from Brest it was quite a long way. So I thought why not throw one here.”, says Oceane.
A daring bet for this rather withdrawn young woman: “That’s the whole complex! (laughs) Basically, I didn’t go to create a club at all, I’m quite a shy person. This club helped me and it freed me.”
For the young facilitator in a kindergarten, it was important to teach this sport: “It’s a discipline that gets lost, even forgotten. So it’s not bad to have a club now!”
It’s a super complete discipline – Océane.
Initially there were only 3, today the club has 22 members. Mainly young girls who are between 4 and 16 years old but the club is also open to boys obviously. All in a family atmosphere: “It’s a discipline that is really complete, with dance or gymnastics. With a spirit that is more family-oriented than Twirling, for example, where there is more the notion of competition”indicates the young woman who practiced Twirling for several years.
But without taking this sport lightly, with more than 3 hours of training per week: 1h30 on Wednesday and 2h on Saturday.
Services hailed by locals
Maelys has been part of the cheerleaders for 3 years. At 15 she found the club that suited her: “I liked the atmosphere at the club. It’s not as strict as I thought. We behave like we’re a bunch of girlfriends, it’s like we’re a big family and I like a lot”, smiled the teenager.
She thrives in this sport: “I really like this sport because it’s super diverse. Sometimes we do fire stick and people are super impressed; they say ‘wow, we were afraid you’d get burned!'” says Maelys.
And also during public performances: “We’re proud of ourselves, to have done that in front of people. They often congratulate us at the end and it’s really nice to hear!”, says the young cheerleader all smiles.
The Majorettes will be at Landerneau carnival on April 3with a choreography on their flagship title: Waka Waka by Shakira.
