12 departments were placed on heatwave red vigilance this Thursday, announces Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, as France crosses an exceptional and early heatwave episode. These are Tarn, Haute-Garonne, Gers, Tarn-et-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne, Landes, Gironde, Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres, Vienne and Vendée, according to Matignon.

On Twitter, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne called for vigilance, recalling the advice in the event of a heat wave: “stay hydrated, stay cool, give and hear from your loved ones”. On Wednesday, only 23 departments were on orange alert, and temperature records for the month of June should be broken in the coming days.

Toll-free number activated

At the same time, the government is activating the “Heatwave info service” toll-free number available on 0800 06 66 66. This number is free between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. from a landline, and provides advice on protection against heat waves.

The prefects of the departments placed in red vigilance can prohibit or limit the scale of certain events such as sporting events or festivals. Instructions can also be issued to crèches, leisure centers and organizations hosting holiday stays to cancel outings, sports activities and festive events. Some establishments may even have to close if the temperature in their premises is too high.

Heatwave peak expected Friday and Saturday

The heat wave is expected “Friday, and especially Saturday with a situation that would often exceed the intensity of (the heat wave of June / July) 2019, with unprecedented temperatures for a month of June”, told AFP Olivier Proust, forecaster at Météo-France. Absolute records could even be broken. Heatwave red vigilance, the highest level of the “national heat wave plan”, corresponds to both an exceptional meteorological event and a health alert justifying a “maximum mobilization”.
